Three federal answers to "which mountain is biggest", and Everest only wins one
Highest above sea level is Everest. Tallest base to summit is Mauna Kea, by more than a kilometre. Farthest from the centre of the Earth is Chimborazo. NOAA prints all three.

With quite clear conditions on the morning of February 3, 2025, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory crews on a monitoring overflight of Kīlauea summit had excellent views of the snow-capped Mauna Kea (shown here) and Mauna Loa. Both mountain summits received snow during a winter storm that passed over the Island of Hawai'i last week.

Verdict
"Everest is the tallest mountain in the world — 29,029 feet."
The individual facts may check out, but the way they are framed leads to a false conclusion.
The number is right, the mountain is real, and the sentence still leaves a reader believing something the responsible agencies do not say.
ESTABLISHED — Everest wins one measurement, decisively. The USGS gives it as "29,029 feet (8,848 meters) above sea level", and no source here disputes that it is the highest point above sea level on Earth.
ESTABLISHED — it does not win base-to-summit. Mauna Kea "rises 13,796 feet (4,205 meters) above sea level" and "extends about 19,700 feet (6,000 meters) below sea level to meet the deep ocean floor", giving a total of "nearly 33,500 feet (10,211 meters)". That is roughly 1,363 metres more than Everest. NOAA reaches the same conclusion in the claim's own word, twice on one page: in prose, "You may be surprised to learn that Everest is not the tallest mountain on Earth, either. That honor belongs to Mauna Kea"; and in the infographic transcript beneath it, "Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain from base to peak at more than 33,500 feet [10,210 meters]."
ESTABLISHED — it does not win distance from the planet's centre either. "The top of Mount Chimborazo is farther from the Earth's center than Mount Everest", by "over 2,072 meters", because Earth "is a bit thicker at the Equator due to the centrifugal force created by the planet's constant rotation" and Chimborazo sits "just one degree south of the Equator where Earth's bulge is greatest". Chimborazo is only 6,268 metres above sea level; it wins on a different axis entirely.
So this is a definition dispute wearing the costume of a fact, which is what the Records & Superlatives test exists to catch. Misleading rather than False, because under the measurement most people intend the claim is correct — and rather than Unresolved, because nothing here is unresolved. All three figures are agreed. Only the question is ambiguous.

In short

Everest wins the question people are actually asking
Height above mean sea level. It is the measurement on the maps, in the textbooks, and behind almost every use of the word. The USGS gives Everest as 29,029 feet (8,848 metres) above sea level, and nothing in this file disputes it or intends to.
If that is the question, the argument is over.
It is not the only question
Base to summit. Mauna Kea rises 13,796 feet (4,205 m) above the Pacific — noticeably less than Everest. It also extends “about 19,700 feet (6,000 meters) below sea level to meet the deep ocean floor.” The USGS totals it:
Its total height is nearly 33,500 feet (10,211 meters).
That is roughly 1,363 metres more mountain than Everest has. And NOAA, a different agency entirely, reaches for the claim’s own word:
You may be surprised to learn that Everest is not the tallest mountain on Earth, either. That honor belongs to Mauna Kea, a volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii.
The infographic on the same NOAA page puts it as a flat positive: “Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain from base to peak at more than 33,500 feet [10,210 meters].”
Distance from the centre of the Earth. A third measurement, and a third winner. Chimborazo, in Ecuador, tops out at 6,268 m above sea level — more than two kilometres shorter than Everest by the usual measure. But the planet is not a sphere:
Earth is not a perfect sphere, but is a bit thicker at the Equator due to the centrifugal force created by the planet’s constant rotation.
Chimborazo sits one degree south of the Equator, where that bulge is greatest. The result:
the summit of Chimborazo is over 2,072 meters farther from the center of the Earth than Everest’s peak
The dispute is not about the numbers
Nobody disagrees about any figure here. Everest is 8,848 m above sea level, Mauna Kea is about 10,211 m base to summit, and Chimborazo’s summit is the farthest point from the planet’s core. All three statements are true simultaneously, published by federal agencies, and in no tension whatsoever.
What produces the argument is a single missing word. “Tallest” gets used for three different measurements, and the one you mean decides who wins.
What this file does not claim
That Everest is overrated, or that the record is somehow soft. It is the highest point above sea level on Earth, which is a real and hard-won superlative, and the version of this file that ends with a reader thinking otherwise has done more damage than the claim it corrects.
That everyday speech is wrong to use “tallest” and “highest” interchangeably. People are not writing survey reports. The narrow claim here is that the agencies publishing the numbers do distinguish them, and that NOAA prints “tallest mountain on Earth” next to Mauna Kea.
And it does not claim Mauna Kea’s total is exact. Where a volcano’s base lies is itself a definitional choice — which is the same problem as the headline one, one level down.

Evidence that cuts the other way
Findings that complicate or argue against the verdict above. They are listed because leaving them out would make the file look stronger than it is.
The correction must not overshoot into "Everest is not special". It is the highest point above sea level on the planet, that is the measurement the word usually carries, and nothing here disputes the figure. A reader who walks away thinking Everest was overrated has been misled in the opposite direction.

"Tallest" and "highest" are used interchangeably in ordinary speech, and this file does not claim the everyday usage is an error. What it claims is narrower: the agencies that publish the numbers use the two words for different measurements, and NOAA assigns "tallest" to Mauna Kea in print.
Mauna Kea's total height depends on where its base is placed, which is itself a definitional choice rather than a measurement. The USGS figure of about 6,000 metres below sea level "to meet the deep ocean floor" is the one used here, and a different choice of base would give a different total.

What we still don’t know
- Everest's official height. The sources here print 8,848 m. The figure jointly announced by China and Nepal in 2020 is 8,848.86 m, and earlier surveys differ again by a metre or two depending on whether the snow cap is included. That primary survey was not read for this file, so the round figure is used and the argument does not turn on the decimals — a 1,363-metre gap to Mauna Kea is not sensitive to them.
- Where Mauna Kea's base lies. "The deep ocean floor" is a reasonable and stated choice, but a volcano built on a flexed oceanic plate has no single obvious base, and the total height follows from that choice. This is the same class of ambiguity the file is about, one level down.
- The Chimborazo-to-Everest difference of 2,072 m depends on the reference figure used for Earth's shape. NOAA states the number without specifying which ellipsoid or geoid model underlies it, and no attempt was made here to reproduce the calculation.
- Whether a shield volcano and a Himalayan peak are the same kind of object is a question this file does not settle. Both sources call them mountains and this file follows them.

The third measurement, and the vocabulary. Establishes that Chimborazo's summit is over 2,072 m farther from Earth's centre than Everest's, that this follows from the equatorial bulge and Chimborazo's position one degree south of the Equator, and that Chimborazo is 6,268 m above sea level. It also prints Everest's height above sea level — "Reaching 8,848 meters at its summit, Everest is indeed the highest point above global mean sea level" — which is what allows this file's hook to say NOAA publishes all three answers. And separately, the base-to-summit answer, in two forms this file is careful to quote as written: the prose sentence "Everest is not the tallest mountain on Earth, either. That honor belongs to Mauna Kea", and the infographic transcript's flat positive, "Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain from base to peak at more than 33,500 feet [10,210 meters]." NOAA has no sentence reading "Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on Earth", and this file no longer prints one. A different agency from S1, reaching the same conclusion about Mauna Kea by the same measurement. Genuine corroboration rather than one voice twice.

Checked for circularity: S1 and S2; S1 and S3; S2 and S3 were confirmed not to derive from one another. Two sources that trace back to the same origin are one source, and counting them twice is the most common way a false claim looks well-evidenced.
How we checked this
What we went looking for, and what we found
Three checks, one of which set the verdict and one of which changed the image.
First, on the verdict. False was rejected quickly: under height above sea level, which is what "tallest" usually carries in speech, Everest wins and the figure is not disputed. Unresolved was rejected too, and that is the more interesting rejection — nothing here is unresolved. All three measurements are agreed by the agencies that publish them. What is ambiguous is the question, not the answer, and Misleading is the verdict that describes a true statement producing a false conclusion.
Second, against the correction overshooting. The seductive version of this file ends with "so Everest isn't really the biggest", which would leave a reader worse informed than the claim did. Everest is the highest point above sea level on the planet. That is written into the contradicting evidence rather than left to the reader's charity.
Third, on the image, where the finding changed what shipped. The best illustration is a 2011 USGS photograph of Mauna Kea's whole shield profile, which shows the shape the argument depends on. It is published at 1200 × 800, leaving 1006 px at the house aspect, below the card's 1080 px width — so it was rejected for upscaling rather than used, and the reason is recorded on the file. The same item also names no photographer, only a publishing agency, which would have made it `other-documented`; the image that shipped prints "USGS photo by" and is `us-federal-work`. The weaker-rights, better-composed option losing to the stronger-rights, adequately-composed one is the same call SF-0023 made, and it is being made consistently now that the rule is written down.

RESEARCH AND IMAGE COMPLETE. TWO GATES OUTSTANDING.
Opens `records-and-superlatives`, whose test is "a superlative with a named adjudicating body or primary record, and a stated definition — because most record disputes are definition disputes". This file is that sentence: three definitions, three winners, no disagreement about any figure.
Sources are genuinely independent — USGS and NOAA are different agencies, and they agree about Mauna Kea by the same measurement. That is corroboration rather than one voice counted twice, which is worth stating because SF-0024 had the opposite situation and said so.
COOLING-OFF HAS NOW RUN, by an independent session on 2026-08-05. It found a fabricated quotation in the body — an ellipsis that crossed a sentence boundary and turned NOAA's statement about Everest into a statement about Mauna Kea — and a caption that told readers to read sea level off a forested ridge a kilometre above it. Both are fixed and both are recorded in full under coolingOffNotes. Neither changed the verdict.
OUTSTANDING — the owner has not approved publication. DRAFT is not permission to publish, and the calendar side of the cooling-off gate does not clear until the day after the verdict was assigned.
ARCHIVE SNAPSHOTS — all sources carry an archiveUrl. Corrected 2026-08-05: an earlier pass recorded some of them as archiveCheck: none-exists, on the strength of the Internet Archive's availability API, which had answered that no capture existed. It was wrong, and so was the note that called that "a fact about the archive's coverage". The CDX API lists captures for every one of them. The availability endpoint returns an empty answer for URLs the archive demonstrably holds, and an empty answer is indistinguishable from an authoritative no. `npm run archive` now queries CDX for exactly this reason.
No sensitivity flag. The subject is a measurement dispute. The only individual named is the photographer, because the agency names him.
